|CATS PROVIDES A BETTER REPORTING SOLUTION
CATS can be bundled with an Information Builders WebFOCUS Reporting Solution. Information Builders has been in the business of integrating data for over 25 years. The Business Integration Suite allows almost any data on any platform to be accessed by WebFOCUS. This includes complete drill through capability for all IBI software. Any summary report can drill through to detailed and/or transaction information from other data sources (ROLAP & OLAP). These data sources can be on other platforms in other databases, and include packaged systems like SAP, Baan, PeopleSoft, and transactional systems (OLTP) such as CICS.
The leader in Web reporting and information delivery, WebFOCUS turns data into information to give people insight into their business processes, supply chain operations, and customer relationships. The challenges of information in business today can be summed up as follows. More demand for greater amounts of data in less time. To meet these challenges, an effective business intelligence solution must provide three services: Integration, Information, and Interaction.
WebFOCUS removes the barriers caused by the complexity of the technical environment. It can access and integrate data from any source, providing direct user access or data warehousing services. Not only does WebFOCUS easily assimilate new technologies and data sources, it provides comprehensive, native data access to more than 85 data sources, including relational, legacy, ERP, and CRM, on all platforms, including S/390 mainframe. As a result, you can save months of time and significant costs in setting up the reporting environment.
WebFOCUS dynamically turns data into relevant, consistent information. It enables rapid application development for reports, Web page creation, and wireless integration. WebFOCUS also supports complex problem solving, with sophisticated summarization and formatting and the ability to process requests intelligently and efficiently. It allows any user (internal or external) to report and analyze from enterprise systems with nothing more than a Web browser.
WebFOCUS delivers interactive content to employees, managers, partners, and customers via Web and wireless devices, as well as e-mail anytime, anywhere. It delivers information in any format, including ad hoc reports, production reports, Web self-service applications, OLAP, spreadsheets, documents, charts, and portals.
AD HOC REPORTING CAPABILITIES ARE AS ROBUST AS CANNED REPORTS
Ad hoc reporting can be accomplished with WebFOCUS in multiple ways, depending on your vision of ad hoc reporting. WebFOCUS can support the use of self service applications, which might contain and use standard web components such as HTML pages, active server pages, java script, JSP, etc. These self-service applications can provide the user with a menu of reports from which they can choose. These reports in return might present the user with drop-down lists, check boxes, radio buttons, etc., which allow the user to choose data columns, sorting, aggregation, data filters, measures, dimensions, and output format(s). By building flexible web self-service applications, your incentive compensation administrators can work with options that automate the creation of literally hundreds of thousands of reports, without the user having to develop or code any reports. WebFOCUS security integrates efficiently with your operating system security and provides enhanced security at deeper levels for security at the system, application, database, and field-value levels. WebFOCUS can access the following popular data sources:
Access, ADABAS, ALLBASE/SQL, ALL-IN-1, C-ISAM, CA-Datacom/DB, CA-IDMS, DB2, DB2/400, DB2, UDB, DBMS, dBASE, DL/1, DMS, ENSCRIBE, ESSBASE, FOCUS, IDMS, IMS, INFOMAN, Informix, Ingres, ISAM, KSAM, MODEL 204, MUMPS, NetISAM, NonStop SQL, OMNIDEX, Oracle, PACE, Private Files, Progress, QSAM, Rdb, Red Brick, RMS, ShareBase, SQL/DS, SQL/Server, SQL OLAP, SUPRA, Sybase, SYSTEM 2000, Teradata, TOTAL, TurboIMAGE, UFAS, ULTRIX/SQL, UNIFY, UX C-ISAM, VSAM, WDS, WIIS, Packages SAP R/3, SAP BW, PeopleSoft, Baan, J.D. DELIVER INFORMATION IN VIRTUALLY ANY FORMAT AT ANY TIME
- Generate reports in a wide range of formats including HTML, Excel, PDF, postscript printer files, word processing documents, and Excel 2003.
- Trigger reports using scheduling, event-driven scenarios (such as when new data becomes available), or alerts, which distribute reports only when specified conditions are met.
- Push reports via e-mail, the Web, or network printers.
- Push reports to any wireless, modem-attached, or synchronizable device. Report Caster offers the most robust wireless distribution capabilities of any reporting solution on the market today.
WebFOCUS Report Caster features a new architecture that supports large numbers of end users while using minimal resources. Product components can be centralized on a single machine to minimize network traffic or distributed across several platforms to balance machine utilization. Efficient resource use is further enhanced by high performance throughput.
UNIQUE BURSTING CAPABILITY
Report Caster can burst a single report into multiple sections and send each section to a different Web server, e-mail address, printer, or wireless device. Reports are burst based on sort fields – by name, branch office, sales region, department, or management level, for example. With just one pass of the data, you satisfy the needs of many users throughout your organization. The need to run, collate, and mail multiple reports is eliminated. Administrators and clerical staff save hours of work, and valuable processing time is preserved.
Through a Web-based console facility that's accessible via any standard browser, administrators can exercise total control over all Report Caster activity. The administrator can specify who is permitted to schedule and run reports and determine exactly what information each user can access.
MANAGEMENT AND MONITORING
Report Caster enables administrators to easily monitor and manage all activity to ensure the smooth flow of information. Administrators and power users can elect to be notified via e-mail every time a job is run, or only when a job has failed to execute properly, when the mail server is unavailable, a bad USERID or password is used, or when an alert condition fails. At any time, administrators can view job queues, job details, or adjust the order of scheduled jobs to accommodate urgent projects.
Administrators and end users can schedule reports based on conditional requirements, for example, when sales figures fall below a certain amount. The report can be scheduled to run at any interval depending on how volatile the data is and how frequently it needs to be checked. Only when the condition is met is an alert pushed to the user.
FLEXIBILE USER ENVIRONMENT
Report Caster makes it easy to offload scheduling responsibility to end users or designated power users. Once authorized, users may schedule reports through an easy-to-use GUI interface or through HTML pages customized to each user's particular needs. Users can schedule their reports at any interval, select a distribution method, and use public or private mailing lists. Alternately, a subscription reporting application can be implemented, allowing an administrator to retain full control over scheduling times. End users simply add themselves to a report distribution list by supplying their e-mail address.
Your governing rules can range from very simple to very complex. For example, if your browser times out in 60 seconds, you can tell WebFOCUS Resource Governor to block all queries that will return in 61 seconds or more. Also, you may want to stop any query that takes more than 30 seconds during peak processing times, unless initiated by a power user. Whatever the rule, WebFOCUS Resource Governor will enforce it.
GET UP AND RUNNING ON INTERNET TIME
WebFOCUS Resource Governor is an easy-to-use solution that allows you to optimize control over your system right out of the box. The Web-based administrator offers a single, intuitive interface from which to manage governing rules for all tables, users, and platforms in your environment. And, creating rules is a snap. A Rules Wizard lets you build common governingrules with just a few clicks of the mouse. These rules may include:
- Preventing runaway queries that use wild-cards like "SELECT" or "PRINT."
- Limiting the number of joined tables.
- Requiring filters on indexed columns.
- Disallowing queries during certain times.
- Providing a message explaining why the request was canceled.
- Allowing power users to bypass governing.
CREATE RULES FOR A WIDE RANGE OF USAGE CHARACTERISTICS
Rules based on a wide range of usage characteristics can be implemented immediately upon installation. These usage characteristics include:
- User ID's.
- The number or names of joined tables.
- Columns selected or used in "WHERE" or "IF" clauses.
- The time the request was submitted.
In addition, WebFOCUS Resource Governor begins learning how to enforce rules based on performance characteristics as soon as you run your first WebFOCUS report. These performance characteristics can include:
AUTOMATIC ADAPTATION TO CHANGING USAGE AND PERFORMANCE PATTERNS
- CPU resources consumed.
- Total elapsed query time.
- Number of records returned.
- Number of database I/O'S.
WebFOCUS Resource Governor automatically adapts to changing usage and performance patterns with minimal maintenance and intervention. Every time a user submits a WebFOCUS query, request and resource consumption characteristics are gathered. With this information, an Experience Base is created. From the Experience Base, WebFOCUS Resource Governor produces a unique set of resource limitation rules for your site and refreshes them whenever query patterns change.
FULLY INTEGRATED ENTERPRISE SOLUTION
WebFOCUS Resource Governor is an integral component of the WebFOCUS Business Intelligence Suite and works with any of the 80-plus data sources on 35 platforms that WebFOCUS supports. It is designed to integrate tightly with WebFOCUS Resource Analyzer, our sophisticated query analysis tool that helps you fine-tune and optimize your business intelligence environment. Working together, these two solutions enable you to achieve consistent, unbeatable systems performance, day in and day out.
Estimate the time that would be required for a new user to achieve a high level of proficiency with the reporting/query tools. Users of self service web applications developed in WebFOCUS will not require training, as long as they know how to use PCs equipped with web browsers. Ad hoc users, power users, and report developers, who are already familiar with their data and the business challenge they are tasked with solving, can be productive with WebFOCUS the very first day they start using it. Using the accompanying documentation, and taking advantage of the recommended, scheduled education, these users will gain knowledge and be very proficient in WebFOCUS in a few short days.
